How to find and hire a mobile app developer

August 30, 2026 · BytePresence

Where to start with an app idea, what to look for in a team, and realistic budget expectations for a first version.

An app idea is not a spec. Before you search for a developer, write down the first version a user can actually complete in one sitting — sign up, do one core job, get a result. Everything else is v2.

Where to find app developers

  • Referrals from founders who shipped — ask what went wrong after launch, not only who built v1.
  • Studios with apps live in the App Store and Play Store under their portfolio.
  • Specialist agencies over general “we do everything” shops when the product is mobile-first.
  • Job boards and freelance platforms for tight budgets — higher risk; insist on milestone payments and store submission in scope.

What to look for when hiring

  • Shipped releases you can download and test — not prototype videos.
  • Clear plan for backend, APIs, auth, and data — mobile is never only the UI.
  • Analytics, crash reporting, and a story for store submission and review rejections.
  • Maintenance and update pricing after v1 — apps are products, not one-off projects.
  • Honest platform advice: one codebase (e.g. React Native) vs native when it fits.

How much it costs to hire someone to build your app

A focused v1 from an experienced studio commonly lands in the $15,000–$40,000 range for one or two platforms with auth, a core flow, and a simple admin or API. Payments, offline mode, multiple user roles, chat, maps, or heavy integrations move the number up quickly. Enterprise and regulated industries add compliance and testing time.

The cheapest quote often excludes store fees, backend hosting, push notifications, and the second round of fixes after real users arrive. Ask what “done” means: TestFlight build, production store listing, or first paying customer?
