SEO in 2026 and 2027 is still SEO. The model just sits in front of the results.

AI Overviews did not invent a new discipline. They sit on the same index. What still pays: a product with a story, blogs you could only write, earned links, crawlable pages — not an llms.txt.

A lot of 2026 SEO content is selling a rename. GEO. AEO. “Optimize for the citation.” The pitch is that ranking died, a new priesthood arrived, and you need a special file, a special schema, and a special paragraph length so the model will notice you.
Google’s own guide, published in May 2026 and tightened in June, is blunter: generative features on Search — AI Overviews, AI Mode — are rooted in the same ranking and quality systems as the rest of Search. They retrieve pages from the index, then write an answer with links. If you are not crawlable, not indexed, and not eligible for a snippet, you are not in the answer. That is still SEO.
What did change is the click. For a lot of “what is” and “how do I” queries, the overview is the first thing a person reads. Some of those people never hit your page. That is not a reason to spam the model. It is a reason to stop publishing commodity recaps the model can already write, and to put the real product, the real proof, and the real next step on pages that are worth leaving the answer for.
What still pays in 2026–2027
A page the index can use
Crawlable, indexed, snippet-eligible. Semantic HTML a person and a crawler can read. JavaScript that does not hide the offer. If Googlebot cannot see it, Gemini cannot cite it from Search.
Non-commodity content
First-hand work: how you built it, what broke, what the numbers were, what you would not do again. A “7 tips” list the model could generate from ten other lists is the page that disappears into the overview.
Structure for readers
Headings that match the job, sections a person can scan, images and video where they help. Google’s line is that you do not need to chunk pages into 140-word pods. Write for the visitor. The model can extract.
A conversion after the citation
Informational clicks got thinner. Category pages, product pages, pricing, booking, and local listings still have to close. Merchant Center and a complete Business Profile matter when the answer is shopping or “near me.”
Measurement you can defend
Search Console’s Generative AI performance report for Overviews and AI Mode. Analytics for what people do after they arrive. Rankings and “AI citation dashboards” you cannot audit are not the same thing as a lead.
Agents on the horizon
Into 2027, some visits will be a browser agent reading the DOM, not a person. Clear HTML, a usable accessibility tree, and honest product data help. That is not a reason to ignore the human who still has to trust the page.

What you can ignore for Google — and what other engines actually are
Google listed the theater: llms.txt and other “special” machine files, rewriting copy just for AI, inauthentic mentions planted around the web, and treating structured data as a prerequisite for Overviews. Schema still helps rich results. It is not a secret handshake with Gemini. Scaled pages for every fan-out variant of a query is spam policy, not a strategy.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot are not Google. They retrieve differently — Bing, their own crawlers, licensed sets. If those surfaces matter to you, do not block their bots by accident, and do not assume a Google ranking is a citation everywhere. Also do not assume an llms.txt will get you into AI Overviews. Google said it does not use that file.

What is actually relevant — SEO, GEO, and the rest of the names
Call it SEO or GEO. The model still needs a page it can retrieve and a brand it can trust. These are the jobs that show up in both the blue links and the answer. Twelve, because a slide with three slogans is how this work gets skipped.
Twelve practices that still do the work
A product that tells the user’s story
Who it is for, what it does, what changed after they used it. Models and people cite the specific. A homepage of adjectives is not a source.
Blogs and pages only you could write
Editorial that comes from the work: how you built it, what broke, what you would not do again. Commodity recaps get absorbed into the overview. First-hand posts get named.
Earned backlinks, not a package
Links from relevant pages that a reader would actually follow. Editorial, digital PR, partners. We do not run link schemes. Bought links are a risk, not a GEO tactic.
Technical crawl and index
HTML the crawler can read, a sitemap, canonicals, robots that are not fighting you, JavaScript that does not hide the offer. If it is not in the index, it is not in the answer.
On-page that matches intent
One clear job per URL. Titles, headings, and internal links that name the query in human language. Keyword stuffing is how you look like everyone else the model already summarized.
Passages a model can lift
Put a direct answer near the heading that asks the question. That is GEO without a 140-word religion. Write for the visitor. The extraction is a side effect of clarity.
Structured data for rich results
Article, product, FAQ, organization, local — where they are true. Schema helps Search features. Google does not require a special GEO schema to be cited.
Proof, authors, and a real About
Named people, dates you would defend, reviews, work you can point at. Experience and trust are how a source survives when ten sites say the same thing.
Brand mentions that actually happened
Consistent name, same product story on the site and off it. Forums, press, and partners when they are real. Fake mentions planted for the model are spam. Google said so.
Original images and video
Photos and clips from the product, not stock of a handshake. Search and AI features can surface media. Unique visuals are harder to collapse into a generic answer.
Speed, mobile, and a page that converts
Core Web Vitals, a layout that works on a phone, a next step: book, buy, enquire. A citation without a landing that closes is a brand mention. Traffic without an offer is a report.
Feeds, local, and measurement
Merchant Center and a complete Business Profile when that is the business. Search Console for rankings and generative appearances. Analytics for what those sessions do. No invented citation lifts.
Keep the important pages current because the facts changed — not because a calendar said thirty days. Use AI as a draft if you must; publish only what meets the same bar as the rest of the site. The 2027 version of this job is the same list with a louder answer box and more machine visitors. Be the source the systems have to ground on because the page is specific, crawlable, and useful — not because you bought a new acronym.
